The famously long, low silhouette, ever-alert expression, and bold, vivacious personality of the Dachshund have made him a superstar of the canine kingdom. Dachshunds come in two sizes and in three coat types of various colors and patterns. The word ‘icon’ is terribly overworked, but the Dachshund’ with his unmistakable long-backed body, little legs, and big personality’ is truly an icon of purebred dogdom. Dachshunds can be standard-sized (usually 16 to 32 pounds) or miniature (11 pounds or under), and come in one of three coat types: smooth, wire haired, or longhaired. Dachshunds aren’t built for distance running, leaping, or strenuous swimming, but otherwise these tireless hounds are game for anything. Thanks for visiting our website. I am called Jerry Simmons. The Jerry’s family are the owners of Family Dachshunds. We have been breeding this lovely breed dogs since 2014. My wife and I are pet lovers so we took up the initiative to breed these lovely dog breed to satisfy the needs of families who will want to own or add a new member to their family. My knowledge about the Dachshund has grown as the years go by as they are a dog breed that are very smart and make us to learn new things everyday. My history with owning a puppy goes right back to my Christmas holidays when I was 10 years old. My parents bought me a lovely Dachshund puppy which I named Liam. Liam gave me a lot of childhood memories when I was growing as a teen. He was more than a best friend to me. He was so lovely and friendly. Each time I got angry back then about something, Liam was always there to console me and make me smile again. I always thought he could talk as he understood me so much. I always speak to him at times hoping he will respond. Everywhere I went to, Liam was with me. I met my wife in college. We were very good friends back then. She loved Liam until she insisted her parents should get her a Dachshund. That was how our love for this lovely dog breed grew up. Our dogs use to play together. Unfortunately in our later years at college, I lost my lovely puppy Liam. We grew up loving each other so much and loving this dog breed. Later on, we got married and with our love for Dachshunds. We decided to breed and raise this dog breed and why not educate puppy lovers about the importance of owning a Dachshund puppy. Fast forward to today, my wife and I raise our 2 kids and breed the Puppies on our 3 acres of land where our puppies have enough space to play around. My family and I are dedicated to help everyone own the perfect, healthy puppy for their home. With our knowledge of this dog breed from childhood, we will say Dachshund’s are the best dogs to own. We spend our time in training these puppies and making sure we help families own the most intelligent of this dog breed. Temperament and Intelligence
The Dachshund is a clever, courageous, and endlessly devoted companion with a personality much larger than its size. Originally bred to be independent hunters, they are exceptionally brave and persistent. While they make wonderful family pets, they are best known for their loyalty to their “person.” Unlike high-energy herding breeds, the Dachshund is highly adaptable; they thrive in apartment living and smaller homes just as much as in houses with large gardens, provided they have a cozy spot to burrow and daily walks to keep them fit.
Training a Dachshund is a rewarding journey of bonding. While they are highly intelligent and quick to learn, they possess a famous “hound spark” of independence. They respond best to positive reinforcement, treats, and consistency. Because they are a sensitive breed, they form deep emotional connections with their owners and prefer to be indoors as part of the family rather than being left alone outdoors.
In terms of temperament, Dachshunds are curious and alert, often acting as excellent little watchdogs. Every puppy is an individual, and their personality is shaped by a combination of their strong genetics, a loving environment, and the early socialization we provide here at Prime Dachshunds.
Appearance and Grooming:
Dachshunds are unique in the canine world because they come in three distinct coat types, each with its own grooming needs. Regardless of the coat, Dachshunds are moderate shedders and are not considered a hypoallergenic breed. If you have severe pet allergies, it is important to spend time with the breed before committing.
The three coat varieties include:
Smooth-Haired: A short, dense, and shining coat that requires very little maintenance beyond a quick wipe-down or weekly brushing.
Long-Haired: Features sleek, glistening, often wavy hair that is longer under the neck, trunk, and behind the legs. This variety requires regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats.
Wire-Haired: Consists of a tight, thick, hard outer coat with a finer, somewhat softer undercoat. They are famous for their “beard” and bushy eyebrows.
Colors and Patterns: According to breed standards, Dachshunds come in a stunning array of colors. The most common are Red, Black and Tan, and Chocolate and Tan. You will also find beautiful patterns such as Dapple (merle), Piebald, and Brindle.
Grooming & Health Maintenance:
General Care: Unlike many breeds, Dachshunds are relatively “wash and wear” dogs and don’t have a strong “doggy smell.” Bathing should be done only as needed to avoid drying out their skin.
The “Back” Rule: While grooming, always support a Dachshund’s entire length. Their long spines make them prone to IVDD, so they should never be picked up by the front legs alone.
Nails & Ears: Because they aren’t as high-impact as herding dogs, their nails may not wear down naturally and require monthly trimming. Their floppy ears should be checked weekly for wax buildup or moisture to prevent infections.
Dental Care: Small breeds are prone to dental issues, so regular teeth brushing is highly recommended to keep your Doxie healthy for years to come.
